How to Set Health Goals – Dr. Jason Jones Elizabeth City NC Chiropractor

People find it so easy to set health goals but sticking to those goals becomes the main issue. While resolutions are good, goal setting is even better.

Follow these steps in order to set your health goals:

Make it matter

One of the main reasons that people do not meet their health goals is because they are not invested in them. If you think that a goal is not specific to you, you are less likely to work hard to meet it. When setting health goals, make it matter to your daily life. Look for something that is specific to you that you can commit fully to.

Brainstorm all options

Getting healthier is a good goal but a smarter goal is to consider five to six issues in your life that you can fix in order to get to that worthy yet broad target. Always start with what is easier to accomplish because it will raise your confidence in your ability to meet the harder goals.  After you have picked the problem you would like to solve, brainstorm on all possible solutions. Write out the pros and cons of each solution to help you find the best solution.

Set sensible targets

Lofty ambitions are good but too high targets can stress you and increase your chances of failure. Failing is okay but the more you fail, the more your confidence decreases. Don’t take on too much especially if you’re in a stressful situation. Realistic goals are confidence builders. Set specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and timely goals. Stop setting vague goals like avoid hypoglycemia. A smart goal would be: cut down on the frequency of lows from six in a week to three before the nest endocrinologist appointment by keeping some glucose in every room.

Be specific

Get into the specifics and define explicit goals that matter to you. E.g. losing weight is such a broad goal and most people often don’t know where to begin.

Break it down

Long-term health goals are okay. However, reaching them will require you to work on a smaller scale beginning with your current abilities. Health goals need to be small bay steps that accumulate to your end goal.

Set deadlines

Open-ended goals have no motivation. Deadlines help you swing into action. They should be adequate enough to help you complete the task.

Ask for help

Support from your health care team can boost your chances of success. When you are having a difficult time setting your health goals, ask for your doctor’s help. Your doctor will hold you accountable for your goals.

Find cheerleaders

Find friends and family who can cheer you on and help you avoid slips. Support groups like diabetes support groups are also good.

Anticipate barriers

There will be a few obstacles to your goals whether they are in your control or from outside forces. Think about expected barriers and how you are going to tackle them.

Reward yourself

Rewards increase your motivation. Reward yourself after you reach a goal.

Whatever you do always keep going on. Meeting your health goals can be a long process so you must accept to put in the time and effort.
