Fish Oil Facts from Dr. Jason B. Jones Elizabeth City Chiropractor

Post Date: March 1st, 2011

Let’s face it, unless you have lived under a rock for the last 30 years almost everything in the media has tried to steer you toward a low-fat diet.  Now, there are certain fats that you should avoid at all cost especially trans-fats.  The good news is that there a many good fats out there and many of them are good for you.  Fish oil is probably the most popular.  Now when it comes to fish oil I am no expert, but I have probably read more on this subject than anyone you know.  You see, my wife Allison’s mom was struck with dementia in her late 50′s and eventually died at the age of 62.  This was devastating as we felt as though there was nothing we could do.  However, at least for me it was the start of a journey that led me to study why and how something like this could happen.  Not until the last several years had the idea of rebuilding the brain been feasible.  But it is.  So I studied all I could to find out why this happened, but also what we could do about it.  That is the short version of how I came to know all about fish oil.  Again, there is much I don’t know…….here is some of what I do know:

  1. Not all fish oil is created equal
  2. Fish are loaded with metals, PCB’s, dioxins…….fancy words for toxic materials that are bad for us
  3. There is a specific process to eliminate these toxins from the oils we consume in pill form, sadly most oils people buy don’t use specific filtration, but they are sold anyway
  4. it takes approximately 100 gallons of fish oil to make 1 gallon of pharmaceutical grade fish oil.   The other 99 gallons are sold to you and I at corner drug stores, warehouse retailers, and other vitamin stores
  5. Where the oil is harvested from is also crucial. Oil from a farm-raised salmon is not the same as one from the Pacific ocean
  6. In a nut shell, my opinion is that you should only take good filtered oil.
  7. There are few companies that manufacture good oils and many that manufacture lesser quality oils
  8. In our office we only recommend/support/and sell oils that I would ingest and give to my own family.
  9. Fish oil is a great source of Omega 3 fatty acids which are good for your brain and nervous system, immune system, cardiovascular system, etc.
  10. Every cell (all 70 trillion) in the human body has a wall that is made from fat.  It is made from the fat you eat.  If you eat good fats, your cell walls are better equipped for all the communication that occurs on a daily basis.

Deficits in Fatty Acids effect mental state explains Elizabeth City, NC Chiropractor Dr. Jason Jones

Post Date: March 1st, 2011

I learned of this many years ago that then you look at the ration of Omega 6 Fats to Omega 3 Fats in the human body keeping this ration close is important.  Some say it should be a 1:1 ratio and others a 1:1.5.  Regarless, it should not get too out of sink.  It has been estimated that the average American’s ratio is 15-20:1 showing a huge deficit in Omega 3′s like those in fish oil and flax seed oil.  Chronic pain sufferers like Fibromyalgia, etc. have shown to have a ratio of 30+:1 while those suffering with schizophrenia can go as high as 80:1.  Below is an article I recieved from SpectraCell Labortories.  Enjoy,

Prostaglandins Leukot Essent Fatty Acids. 2010 Sep;83(3):131-6.

Polyunsaturated fatty acids deficits are associated with psychotic state and negative symptoms in patients with schizophrenia. Sethom MM, Fares S, Bouaziz N, Melki W, Jemaa R, Feki M, Hechmi Z, Kaabachi N. Department of Biochemistry, Rabta Hospital, Tunis, Tunisia. OBJECTIVE: The study was aimed to examine membrane polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) profile in patients with schizophrenia (SZ) before and after antipsychotic medication and test their association with psychopathology.

METHODS: Erythrocyte membrane fatty acids were analysed by gas chromatography in 36 drugfree patients with SZ and 36 controls. Psychometric evaluation and blood sampling were achieved at baseline and after 3 months of antipsychotic treatment.

RESULTS: At enrolLment, levels of total PUFAs and arachidonic (AA) and docosahexaenoic (DHA) acids were significantly lower, but omega6/omega3 PUFAs ratio was higher in patients. AA and DHA were negatively related to the Andreason’s scale for assessment of negative symptoms (SANS) score. DHA was inversely related to “alogia”, “anhedonia”, “avolition”, and “blunted affect” subitems of SANS. After 3 months under typical antipsychotic drugs, fatty acid profile turned into comparable to controls in parallel with psychopathology improvement.

CONCLUSIONS: Data indicate that PUFAs deficits are associated with psychotic state and negative symptoms of SZ. PMID: 20667702

Stress Reduction Techniques explained by Dr. Jason B. Jones Elizabeth City Chirorpactor

Post Date: February 26th, 2011

From the financial squeeze over the last two years, high unemployment to civil unrest in the Middle East, and let’s face it tax time is coming up people are under more and more stress on a regular basis. Most people are unaware of the very low cost or free techniques they can use to reduce their stress levels dramatically. Stress is the cause of many health problems and according to some authorizes it causes 80+% or all health problems.

Webster’s dictionary defines stress as “Mental, emotional, or physical tension, strain or distress.” So stress can be emotional life and work stress, but it can also be physical stress with a repetitive job, and in addition chemical stress from poor diets and environmental chemicals. Considering these facts we all need to reduce the stress in our lives to prevent future problems.

The good news (and bad news for that matter) is that the human body reacts the same regardless of the type of stress it is under. Even though it is a double edged sword, by using the techniques below you can help yourself simply and easily. Obviously, if there is a way to remove the stressor from your environment is a good idea even though that is not always possible.

Stress Reduction Techniques:
• Deep breathing (sit down for 3-5 minutes and breathe in through the nose and out through the mouth very slowly)
• Watch a funny movie (laughter stimulates the immune system and calms the nervous system)
• Meditate on good times such as previous vacations, achievements, etc.
• Vitamins: B-vitamins and vitamin C along with other vitamins support stress reduction
• Learn to say the word NO to not overload your schedule
• Go for a walk
• Spend time with people who encourage you
• Listen to calming music

Applying the techniques above consistently and regularly is the winning combination to reducing the stress and what it does to our bodies.

Alternatives for ADD/ADHD — Elizabeth City Chiropractor Dr. Jason B. Jones explains

Post Date: February 16th, 2011

ALTERNATIVES TO ADD/ADHD

Here are just a few things that can be tried for a child or adult with ADHD/ADD.  Granted, nothing replaces a proper evaluation (call our office for this), but you can start here.

  1. 66% OF THESE CHILDREN HAVE A FOOD ALLERGY
    1. BEGIN BY REMOVING CERTAIN FOODS AND SEEING WHICH ONE IS CAUSING THE REACTION.
    2. OR HAVE AN ALLERGY TEST DONE—THIS IS DONE BY TAKING BLOOD, NOT THE SKIN TEST.  ASK DR. JONES ABOUT WHERE TO GET THE TEST.
  2. 74% HAVE THE FIRST VERTEBRA IN THE TOP OF THE NECK STUCK TO THE BASE OF THE SKULL.  CHIROPRACTIC ADJUSTMENTS ARE KEY FOR THESE CHILDREN.  IT IS ESSENTIAL THAT MISSED APPOINTMENTS ARE KEPT TO A MINIMUM.
  3. ADD OMEGA-3 FATTY ACIDS TO THE DIET.
  4. REDUCE, MINIMIZE OR ELIMINATE GRAINS AS MUCH AS IS POSSIBLE.
  5. REDUCE, MINIMIZE OR ELIMINATE DAIRY PRODUCTS OF ALL KINDS.
  6. TRY TO GET THE CHILD TO EAT AS MANY FRESH FRUITS AND VEGETABLES AS POSSIBLE.  VEGETABLES ARE BEST IF THEY ARE RAW, HOWEVER STEAMED IS SECOND BEST (BOILING AND MICRO WAVING IS THE WORST).
  7. REDUCE, MINIMIZE OR ELIMINATE PROCESSED SNACKS, MEALS AND/OR FOODS OF ANY KINDS.  STAY UP A BIT LATER AND CUT UP FRUIT FOR SNACKS WITH ALMONDS AND WALNUTS.
  8. DO THE SAME WITH REFINED SUGAR FOODS.
  9. DO NOT SKIMP ON THE FOOD AND SUPPLEMENT QUALITY.  BUY THE GOOD STUFF.

 Talk to you soon,

Happy Valentine’s Day

Post Date: February 9th, 2011

Valentine’s Day conjures up a vision and feeling of “LOVE”.  I think of my wife and kids immediately.   Also, we think of chocolate, flowers, etc. all which bring about a certain feeling.  I have to ask you a deep question.  Do you love yourself?  No, not in a “stuck up” kinda way.  But do you love yourself in a way that drives you to take care of yourself.  You see some of us spend so much time and energy focused on others that we neglect ourselves. This is not to say that helping others is bad….it is actually very noble to do.  However, I am talking about neglecting ourselves to the point that we are compromising our own health.  In other words, if your health gets so bad that you can’t help yourself, how are you going to be able to help those around you (kids, family, etc.)

So love yourself a little by making sure you:

  1.  get your adjustments regularly
  2. eating more fresh fruits and veggies
  3. taking your supplements faithfully
  4. get plenty of exercise
  5. drinking plenty of fresh filtered water and
  6. you are detoxing regularly
  7. think good thoughts and don’t be too hard on yourself (we are all human, right?)

Have a great day and enjoy

Why Should You or Anyone Else Get Regular Adjustments?

Post Date: February 9th, 2011

Well, I am glad you asked.  You see, getting regular adjustments are extremely beneficial to your overall health…..see below.

Subluxations:  (nerve interference or damage caused by misalignments of the spine) cause body and mind miscommunication, malfunction, and dis-ease.

CHIROPRACTIC PREMISE

1) Your nervous system (brain, spinal cord and nerves) controls and coordinates everything in your body and mind.

2) When your nerve energy flows abundantly without obstruction, your body and mind are 100% self-communicating, self-healing, self-regulating and robust.

3) When subluxations (nerve interference or damage) impede nerve flow, similar to static on your cell phone, you are no longer

functioning at 100% and your health and vitality are compromised.

4) Subluxations are caused by our inability to  handle life’s three major stressors; physical, mental-emotional and chemical.

5) Left uncorrected, subluxations have devastating effects upon human health and well-being, leading to breakdown,

malfunction and dis-ease.

6) Our goal is to locate subluxations, remove them and their causes and allow you to heal yourself on every level.

7) Only chiropractors can determine if you have subluxations.

WHO DO YOU KNOW THAT NEEDS TO BE CHECKED?

Good question.  Everyone.  You see, Chiropractic isn’t just for those in pain.  Chiropractic care can enhance the health on anyone for the reasons discussed above.

Tips on Surviving Cold Season

Post Date: February 8th, 2011

If you are like the rest of us you will likely contract some kind of sickness this winter.  There are many things we can do.  We can wait for it to happen, miss work or school and suffer for a few days or a week OR we can proactively prevent the sickness altogether.  Now no matter who you are, you can’t avoid all sickness…..it will happen sooner or later.  However, you can lessen the process or like I said prevent it period.

Here are a few easy steps:

  1. Wash your hands regularly
  2. Don’t eat or drink after anyone
  3. Use an air purifier if you have one or get one
  4. Filter the impurities out of your drinking water with a good filter
  5. Eat immune boosting foods such as garlic, cruciferous vegetables, citrus fruits and anti-oxidant foods like berries of all kinds
  6. Avoid sugar—viruses, bacteria, and fungi all feed on sugar and would like nothing more than for you to provide them with a constant source of food.
  7. There are certain supplements I use (along with my family and patients) to boost immunity.  They are Total Virex and  Total Bac-T (by NutriWest), Echinacea (there are a variety of companies that produces this but I prefer Standard Process)…again, there are more but these are good products that can be taken regularly to prevent illness from starting or at least shorten the life span of it.

Hope this helps, talk to you soon.

Does the source of drinking water matter?

Post Date: January 28th, 2011

The quality of water is extremely important.  The water from the tap not only tastes terrible, but it is also a disaster.  It contains a lot impurities and chemicals that are not good for you.  Most carbon filters (the ones sold in most stores and the ones that you have probably heard of) hold bacteria and viruses.  These bacteria and viruses grow in a wet environment like a water filter.  There are a lot of good filters on the market, but you will not likely find them in the common superstore chains.  You can also spend a lot of money on great filters from stores who specialize in them.  However, you can find inexpensive filter that last for a long period of time (Ask Doctor where to find them).  If you must buy water from the grocery store, buy “Drinking Water”.  There is a lot more to this topic, but this will help you get started.

Also, you may be drinking bottled water that is not good or is terrible for you.  The water may be fine, but the container may be a mess.  It could be the plastic leaking into the water or some other impurity.  If you drink out of the container, the bacteria or any other virus, etc., gets into the water and grows then you drink it into your body.

How much water should we drink daily?

Post Date: January 28th, 2011

The quantity and quality of water are of equal importance.  Many experts will say that the amount of water that is needed is 8 glasses per day.  Does a 300-pound man and a 100-pound woman need the same amount of water?  Of course not, the man needs more.  But I thought everyone needed 8 glasses.  If the man and the woman drank 8 glasses per day, it makes sense that the man would not get enough.  And what size glass do you need, 8 ounce, 12 ounce, etc.  A good “rule of thumb” as to how much water a person needs is done by taking your body weight, cutting it in half, and that is the number of ounces you need per day.  This amount is what is needed on a normal day.  If you sweat or are very active, you will need more.  There are other circumstances that you may need more.

200 pound man = 100 ounces per day

(if you are 50+ pounds overweight, drop the amount of water by 10-20%)

Another good way to measure is the following:  your urine (other than the 1st urine of the day) should be clear or slightly amber in color.  If not, you need more water.
