Can you feel terrible and BE HEALTHY? —- Dr. Jason Jones Elizabeth City, NC Chiropractor

Post Date: July 21st, 2011

Isn’t health all about feeling good?  Well, I wish sort of.  The dictionary states that health is “a state of optimal mental, physical and social well being not merely the absence of disease and infirmities”.  In other words, just because you feel good it doesn’t necessarily mean you are healthy.  Health is about all parts of your body working as close to 100% as possible and in addition a good mental attitude as well.

So, how does that play out in the real world.  Imagine you go out for dinner and you are brought this beautiful meal but it is undercooked.  You don’t recognize the problem you just go ahead and eat.  Then on your way home you begin to feel naseauous and begin throwing up uncontrollably.  Are you sick or are you healthy?  I would contend that what your are experiencing is a sign of good health.  Your body is expelling the food, therefore maintaining your health.  Another example would be a person who drops dead of a heart attack.  The day prior they went out for a 5 mile run, had a physical and was given a clean bill of health…..are they sick or healthy?  I would contend that they were definitely less than healthy.  Why?  Because when you are healthy (remember body working close to 100%) you cannot have a heart attack.  Did you know that statistically cancer can live in your body for 2-10 years before you have any idea that it is even there……scary, huh?

Long story short….you can feel terrible and be healthy and you can feel great and be sick.

Doc, how does someone know when they need an adjustment? — Dr. Jason B. Jones Elizabeth City, NC Chiropractor

Post Date: July 21st, 2011

This is a question that comes up quite often in conversation in one form or another….and it is a very good question.  However, not one that can be answered easily in a few short sentences.  How does someone know when they need an adjustment?  Short answer:  They don’t.  Long answer:  Many judge whether or not they need an adjustment based on how they feel, whether or not they hurt, whether or not what they have going on is bad enough or just to keep thier bodies tuned-up, etc.  What we have to look at is the root of how we come to the conclusion we do or why we think we “need” an adjustment at this time or that time.

So lets explore.  Chiropractic was never designed to treat pain or symptoms.  It is based on the fact that the human body has a nervous system and that nervous system controls and coordinates all body function. “Doc, all body functions?” Yes, ALL FUNCTION.  The nervous system (NS) controls everything from consciousness to heart rate, to breathing……….etc.  Yes, ALL FUNCTION.  So Chiropractic stands on the truth of this.  When the nervous system is working well and the signals/messages from brain are flowing to the cells of the body and back with no intereference then we have the best chance to be healthy.  When the NS is interfered with our health starts to deteriorate, plain and simple.  So what would cause a person’s nervous system to be interefered with?  From a Chiropractic perspective it is what we call a subluxation.  Subluxations are when the vertebra misalign and interefere (pinch, irritate, aggravate, excite, suppress) nerve function.  Subluxations are caused by 3 major stress categories:  Physical stress, Chemical Stress and Emotional Stress.  Physical stress is falls, accidents and traumas of any sort.  Statistically the average child will have 2500 falls before the age of seven.  Chemical stress is bad diets, fast food, environmental toxins, heavy metals, not eating the right foods, not drinking enough clean water and so on.  Emotional stress is mental stress and is most commonly associated with what happens to us in our lives and how we react to it.  Emotional stress can be work related, family, death of a loved one, divorce….basically anything that causes our bodies to go into a stress response.  The stress response of the body (DON’T MISS THIS POINT) is the same whether it is a physical, chemical or emotional stress.  You heard me right, the way the body reacts to stress is the same regardless of the stressor.

So, we are bombarded with different stressors each day and when our bodies are put under more than we can handle, then we “blow a circuit”.  Where you blow a circuit typically is in the spine where the nerve extends from the spinal cord out to the rest of the body.  For example:  Let’s say that a person constantly bombards their body with fatty foods which are broken down with the help of the liver and gall bladder.  It is common for that person to cause a subluxation (misalignment) in between the shoulders (at the T4/5 level).  Why?  Because that is where the nerves come out of the spine and go to and control those organs.

The last and final point is “what if I hurt” or even better “what if I dont?”  Again, see above.  Whether or not someone needs an adjustment is not based on symptoms.  Whether or not someone needs an adjustment is dependant solely on whether or not the person has a subluxation.   So that begs the question “How does someone know if they have a subluxation since that is the reason to get an adjustment?”  Simple, the person must be evaluated by a trained chiropractor to see if they have a subluxation.

How does someone know when they need an adjustment?  Simple, get checked by a chiropractor for subluaxtions regularly as they interfere with nervous system function…..and therefore interfere with body function…..and ultimately interfere with LIFE!

One last interesting point.  Years ago, some foundational research was done on how long would it take to a joint of the body to begin to deteriorate with irreversible damage if it was immobilized.  The answer:  2 weeks.  So since part of a subluxation is loss of range of motion, you should not go longer than 2 weeks without getting checked.

Average Drug Label Lists Over Whopping 70 Side Effects

Using a computer program, scientists analyzed 5,600 drug labels and more than 500,000 labeled effects. They found that the average drug comes with a list of 70 potential reactions, according to researchers.

In fact, the more commonly prescribed drugs averaged around 100 side effects each, with some drugs containing as many as 525 listed reactions.

MSNBC reports:

“The greatest number of side effects was found in antidepressants, antiviral medications and newer treatments for restless leg syndrome and Parkinson’s disease. In general, medications typically used by psychiatrists and neurologists had the most complex labels, while drugs used by dermatologists and ophthalmologists had the least.”

Alzheimer’s and dementia – protecting yourself by Dr. Jason B. Jones Elizabeth City, NC

Post Date: July 8th, 2011

Alzheimer’s/Dementia thoughts:

Unfortunately I watched my mother-in-law deteriorate in front of my eyes and die at the young age of 62 of dementia/Alzheimer’s.  Sadly at that time we did not know what to do at that point.  Interestingly, she was physically in better shape than most however her mental capacity was very minimal.  On top of that, she lost the ability to speak as well.  I look back and it was the single most significant event in transforming me as a physician.  Even though she was too far gone to turn around, it put me on a journey to research and learn things that I probably would never have.  I searched for answers as to how this could happen to someone in their 60’s.    Recent literature tells us that losing our memory as we get older is not normal.  As I was searching I stumbled across certain things that cause brain damage (dementia /Alzheimers—any way you slice it is brain damage).  I was shocked with what I found.  Food additives like MSG and artificial sweeteners were huge culprits.  MSG in particular excites the brain cells to the point of death while damaging and killing all those that are connected to that same brain cell.  Heavy metals such as mercury and aluminum (which we found when we tested mom) have devastating effects on the brain.  For example, just look at the mounting evidence for mercury alone.  On PubMed there are more than 1500 articles that speak of the toxic effects of mercury…..and the storm around Autism and mercury and vaccines.

My mother-in-law was from Thailand so the potential for high doses of MSG over her lifetime would make sense as Asian cultures tend to use a large amount of it.  I was shocked to find that it is in almost all processed foods and this is one of the ways that they make food with hardly and calories and fat taste good.  Scary huh?

The great part about the journey has been that I have learned a lot of what you can do to protect your brain.  High-quality Omega-3 fats, especially fish oils, are nourishing and protective of the brain and in addition reduce inflammation which is a huge culprit in many of today’s illnesses.  Certain vitamins and minerals as well feed the brain.  Interestingly, the brain’s main food sources are sugar and cholesterol.  Now the sugar that nourishes the brain is not the refined bleached sugar that is in most sweets and packaged foods.  The sugar I am describing is mainly from fruits and vegetables.  “Cholesterol feeds the brain doc, you must me kidding?”  Nope, not kidding.  Cholesterol is vital to the brain and hormone production.  I am unsure if anyone is looking at the huge push of lowering everyone’s cholesterol and if it ties in any way to dementia.  I am not sure if it is a factor, but I simply find it interesting.

So, just a few thoughts on the growing epidemic of dementia.  Protect yourself with knowledge.

“Afraid of Chiropractic Care” according to Dr. Jason B. Jones Elizabeth City, NC

Post Date: May 21st, 2011

“Dr. Jones you have helped me so much and I tell everyone about you………….but many say they are afraid of going to a Chiropractor.” I have heard this over the years and I almost laugh each time I hear it. Laugh, you say WHY? Good reason. Adverse drug reactions from drugs that are properly prescribed and properly administered cause about 106,000 deaths per year. Did you hear/see/get that last sentence. Drugs that are the right ones (as the doctor sees it) in the right dosage given to the patient cause over 100,000 deaths per year….Almost 10,000 per month….over 2000 per week. Would you like to guess how many people die on a Chiropractor’s table every year? 1, 2, 50? Nope! The answer is ZERO! So why I laugh is because some are scared of one of the safest healthcare procedures known to man, however don’t (at times) think twice of medications that cause 100,000 deaths per year. By the way, the 100,000 deaths per year is not just last year. That number has been consistent since it has been tracked and at the very least since the mid-1990′s.

So what is the take home message? Chiropractic has been around for over 100 years and saves lives each and every day. My mom’s life was saved by a Chiropractor. Her health was being destroyed by her job/career. She was fortunate that someone cared enough for her and referred her to a Chiropractor (of which we didn’t have one in our town……the nearest was 1/2 hour away). She followed that recommendation and her life has never been the same. That friend saved her from a life of pain and suffering and gave her the opportunity to have a better life. Our friends love us and refer us to restaurants, gyms, churches, etc.

In my experience, those that are afraid really don’t know much about Chiropractic. So I will ask you: “What are you afraid of?” Do your own research, read this website, watch our video and decide for yourself.

Health and Wellness are contagious,

Dr. Jones

Are electrical devices harming us? presented by: Dr. Jason Jones Elizabeth City Chiropractor

Post Date: May 5th, 2011

Are electronic devices harming us?  I was reminded of this today.  We had an extremely busy day in the office seeing lots of patients.  Isn’t it funny that you get more accomplished the busier you are?   Well, I was doing some testing to check for sensitivity to EMF’s (electo-magnetic frequencies) and there it was time and time again.  I have yet to meet a person who isn’t sensitive to them.  You really must protect yourself.  Get a multi-polar magnet and use it daily.  If you need to call our office and get one.

Below is  a video that explains it all in detail.

Gall Bladder Removal and Intestinal Problems? Dr. Jason B. Jones, DC

Post Date: April 11th, 2011

It seems like more than ever people are having their gall bladders removed.  It is not my intention to agree or disagree with this practice.  I will be stating on this post some facts and observations from clinical practice.

It has been statistically proven that most people will have some sort of lower instestinal complaints/diagnoses within 2 years of having thier gall bladder removed.  It has become routine for me to ask “Do you still have your gall bladder?” when someone reports an intestinal complaint.  People can develop IBS, diverticulitis, colitis, Crohn’s, etc. after having the gall bladder removed.

In addition, I ask “what were you told to do/or not do after you had your gall bladder removed?”  I usually get blank stares.  I understand that when people go in for surgery that the follow up instructions can be forgotten, however I have yet to meet one person who was given any information.  First of all, when there is no gall bladder…….you no longer have the essential bile salts for digestion.  Therefore, you need to take bile salts daily to compensate for this.  Bile also coats your digestive tract.  Since much less is being produced and secreted into the intestines I would suggest consuming extra-virgin un-refined coconut oil daily as well.

Talk to you soon,

Nutrition seminar completed explains Dr. Jason Jones Elizabeth City Chiropractor

Post Date: March 11th, 2011

Well, I just got back from Greensboro yesterday where I have spent the last 6 weeks (Every other Thursday).  The seminar was great.  It was primarily geared around clinical nutrition.  Clinical nutrition is the use of nutrition to support the natural healing and bodily processes.  You see, each part of the body requires certain nutrients (vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients) to operate optimally.  The body can heal itself if the appropriate factors are there (most of the time).  Also, when there are interferences such as structural (this is where Chiropractic comes in), toxins and others the body needs nutrition even more.  The emphasis was on whole foods and whole food supplementation.

Whole foods and whole food supplementation has made a major difference in my own life and my family’s not to mention the major impact I have seen it have on my patients.  You can never learn enough or know it all.

Take care and talk to you soon.

Dr Jason B. Jones
